Is this common? Ive been watching tutotials and it seems like the effect shouldnt be heard when dry?
There is an upcoming firmware release for the DataBender in which 100% dry/wet issues are addressed.
It might solve it… 
Oh, also, not all effects can he turned off completely (led off), maybe they take a look in that too…

I can confirm, the forthcoming Data Bender FW update fixes this issue.
